Top 5 Things to Watch
Sunday, April 5, 2026 3:49PM CDT

OMAHA (DTN) -- Here are the Top 5 things the DTN Newsroom is tracking for the week of April 5. Watch for coverage of these and other topics throughout the week on our subscription platforms as well as on www.DTNPF.com.

Note that all report release times are Central Daylight Time unless otherwise noted.

1. April 9 WASDE: On the heels of the March Prospective Plantings and Grain Stocks reports, we'll see the latest grain markets numbers with the release of the April World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE) report at 11 a.m. Thursday. DTN will post the numbers directly after their release and will continue to update information with details and analysis throughout the day. We'll also have our follow-up webinar, featuring the insights of DTN Lead Analyst Rhett Montgomery at 12:30 p.m. To register, go here: https://www.dtn.com/…

2. Fuel and fertilizer prices: Of course, traders will be watching for any Iran conflict news, China soy purchases and South American weather. Some fertilizer prices have increased by double-digits from a month ago, (see https://www.dtnpf.com/…) and anhydrous had jumped over $1,000 per ton for the first time since 2023. Check out Wednesdays the latest weekly fertilizer trends columns by DTN Staff Reporter Russ Quinn at https://www.dtnpf.com/….

3. Scattered rains continue: The weekend's broad rains over the middle of the country will be followed by light, isolated showers across the Great Lakes on Monday and Tuesday. The next system may move through as early as next Wednesday. We'll check out the next U.S. Drought Monitor announcement Thursday morning to see how these latest systems have altered, or not, dry soil conditions in much of the West and South.

4. South American weather: Wet season showers in Brazil continue to be isolated. Much of the country needs more consistent heavy rainfall during the last month of the wet season for a good safrinha (second) corn crop. In Argentina, a slow-moving front will keep showers going through the weekend before moving north on Monday. Rain will be somewhat favorable, but only for late-planted crops as the early season corn harvest continues to march on and early planted soybeans have started to be harvested as well. Flooding in some areas could hamper harvest.

5. Reports due this week: Monday at 10 a.m., Grain Inspections. At 3 p.m., USDA NASS weekly Crop Progress report. Tuesday at 7:30 a.m., Durable-goods Orders. At 2 p.m., Hatchery Production and Consumer Credit. Wednesday at 9:30 a.m., EIA's weekly petroleum status report, including Ethanol production and inventory. At 1 p.m. the minutes from the Fed FOMC May meeting are released. At 2 p.m., Broiler Hatchery. Thursday at 7:30 a.m., Grain Export Sales, Personal Income and Spending, the PCE Index, Initial Jobless Claims and GDP Q4 second revision. At 9 a.m., Wholesale Inventories. At 10:30 a.m., Weekly Economic Index. At 11 a.m., USDA WASDE May report, see item 1 above. At 2 p.m., Slaughter Weekly. Friday at 7:30 a.m., Consumer Price Index (CPI). At 9 a.m., Factory Orders and Consumer Sentiment. At 2:30 p.m., CFTC's Commitment of Traders report.
